While a local internship is an incredible way to meet new people and expand your network, an international internship is even better! Think of it as having access to a global network of interesting people with life stories and career tips to share. Speaking of tips, here are some top tips for networking during your internship.
Tips for networking
The if i could… programme has formed strong relationships with our international host organisations in Cape Town, New Delhi, Hanoi and Athens. So, it’s likely that the non-profit you are placed with will have hosted interns before.
Our hosts and their teams love meeting new interns and offer placements that will be beneficial to both the intern and the organisation. An internship in a foreign city is an ideal way to build your networks and learning the art of networking starts by building relationships with your new colleagues.
Get to know your coworkers
Chat to as many people at your host organisation as you can! Ask them how they got started in their field and listen to their stories over a cup of coffee or chai tea. Learn about the work of your colleagues. If they don’t work in the same branch as you, set up a brief visit to their office to get a fuller picture of what their job is.
Learn what drives them in their work. How did they arrive at this position? What inspired them to go into the field they’re in? Compliment them on a specific aspect of their work that impresses you. Though everyone may not show it, it’s true that people love a compliment!
Organize a group event
Arrange for a group of your coworkers to go to lunch together, or grab sundowners after work. Everyone will appreciate that you brought them together to have a good time. These memorable moments you share build relationships and solidify friendships.
Keep in touch
You are bound to build strong relationships and make new contacts during your time in abroad. Stay connected through LinkedIn or email, and send your host organisation a note to say thank you for the valuable experience you have gained.
Although networking and meeting new people can be daunting, it is something that will enrich your life forever. Find out more about our international internships by contacting a Programme Coordinator today, or applying online. We can’t wait to hear from you!
