The Diwali story
The story of Diwali is one that is narrated in Hindu families year after year. It tells of how Prince Rama and his wife, Sita, are banished from the kingdom of Ayodhya by Prince Rama’s father, the king.
After ten years of living in the forest, Sita is tragically kidnapped by the evil ten-headed demon, Ravana. She is taken to his lair on the island of Lanka and awaits her rescue. Rama, with the help of the monkey warrior, Hanuman, saves his wife and they start making their way back to Ayodhya.
The people of Ayodhya light divas (small lamps) to help Rama and Sita find their way back to the kingdom. Upon their return, Rama is crowned king.
