Ever wondered what it’s like to visit Cape Town and experience the Mother City culture? Well…
“Creativity happens on the boundaries. And a place like Cape Town is uniquely positioned. It’s a melting pot of cultures and people, with a rich history as well as a focus on modernity.” – South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth.
A popular destination
Cape Town has long been a popular destination for tourists and international interns alike. By volunteering in Cape Town you get to make a difference in developing communities. You can do this while experiencing one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
For many years, if i could… has brought international students and volunteers to intern in Cape Town. As part of our service, we take our interns on outings. These outings show interns popular spots and hidden gems. “Our coordinated outings are a great way to meet other interns in-country,” says former if i could… Programme Coordinator Leandri Pretorius. “We love showing our interns our favourite spots in the city, and enjoy spending time with them.”
The Mother City culture
The Mother City has several notable cultural attractions. One of these attractions is the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. It is built on top of the docks at the Port of Cape Town. It’s the city’s most visited tourist spot. It features great shopping facilities and the popular Two Oceans Aquarium. It is also the location of Nelson Mandela Gateway. This is the departure point for ferries carrying visitors to Robben Island. Here, Tata Nelson Mandela was held imprisoned for 27 years.
The V&A Waterfront is also home to many food markets. The market was launched to introduce locals and foreign visitors to delicious eats from around the world. if i could… tourism intern, Thando Sheleni, took intern Alessandra and her friend Lisa to the V&A Waterfront. This was our first intern outing of 2016. It was a great way for everyone to catch up over a meal. It’s also a place where you are spoilt for choice!
“I decided to try the Tunisian roti as I wanted to taste something new,” says Thando. “It was divine!”
We are looking forward to many more intern outings in and around the city in the upcoming years.
