Lihle shares her internship experience
As a Travel and Tourism Management student at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, I knew that in order to augment my education I needed a practical internship experience. I was eager to work at a company that would give me the opportunity to learn and grow and spent the last six months working as an intern at Creative Consulting & Development Works here in Cape Town.
I have always dreamt of a successful career and I knew there was no better way to achieve success without hard work and a strong focus on my studies. During my internship, I had the opportunity to work with a team of dynamic and experienced professionals. I worked with the if I could… programme team.
The if i could… programme is a facility which matches international students with volunteer internships in the development sectors of Cape Town and New Delhi. I had no prior working experience but because I was surrounded by a supportive and patient team, I had the opportunity to learn new things each day.
Benefits of the internship
I improved in a number of work-related skills such as communication, interpersonal skills and, most importantly, teamwork. I found it easy to adapt to the work environment. My weaknesses were identified and improved in a professional manner. The team sent me on an administrative support course, which highlighted most of the duties and responsibilities expected of me at work.
It advised me on how to overcome challenges, how to complete my tasks and how to manage my time efficiently. I also took part in a negotiation training course. The training was beneficial as I learned how to develop my critical thinking skills and negotiate tactfully. It also helped me realise how important communication is in the workplace.
My experience with Creative Consulting & Development Works and if I could… helped enhance my diploma coursework and gain valuable experience outside the classroom. I had the opportunity to meet people from abroad and learn about different cultures, religions and beliefs.
I felt comfortable asking for help when I didn’t understand anything. The if I could… team members were always supportive and encouraging. It was touching to realise that my personal growth was important to my team, and I was encouraged to develop my potential and make the most of my internship. I am looking forward to taking the skills I learned during my internship with me wherever I go!

Message from Director, Lindy Briginshaw:
In conclusion, We thank Lihle for her contributions and efforts over the past six months. And we wish her well on her future endeavours. Our support through hosting her as a Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) student is one of the ways CC&DW gives back and invests in young South African graduates needing our mentorship, training and support as part of their work-based experience requirement for CPUT. In Lihle’s case, she is registered for a Tourism Diploma. As a result, she is required to intern at an organisation as part of her Diploma requirements. Thank you and good luck, Lihle!
